Introductory Course to WSN

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

The Sensors Network group at the Distributed Laboratory at The University of Copenhagen was in charge of the teachware as part of the Embedded WiseNet project (2004-2006) in the EU. The course is a nice introduction to the TinyOS community  efforts to provide robust open software. The long term goal is to bring a consistent ground for applications beyond the academic world. The course material can be accessed here (2004 and 2005)

ARM-based ZigBee developement kit

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Oki announced the availability of a development kit for its IEEE802.15.4 based ML7065 2.4GHz ZigBee compatible radio. The kit contains the Oki ML7065 radio and Oki’s ARM7TMDI-based 4060 Series Advantage Microcontroller. At a suggested resale price of $499, Oki’s ZigBee Developers Kit (ZDK) is a ‘complete-in-one-box’ ARM-based ZigBee evaluation solution.

Paper: Deploying a Sensor Network in an Extreme Environment

Monday, June 12th, 2006

A wireless sensor network has been designed and deployed to gather data from nodes on and inside glaciers. This paper describes the solutions to power management, radio communications, management and discusses the performance of the final system. 18 months of data have now been received, which provide an insight not only into the glacier’s behaviour but on the design decisions. The system uses custom PIC-based sensor nodes and an ARM-based base station which controls weather and differential GPS. Different versions have been installed in Norway from 2003-5 and this paper describes the lessons learnt from coping with the extreme conditions found in glaciers.

Nano World: Nano-loaded wireless sensors

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

Devices the size of a dime armed with reprogrammable sensors, laden with nanoparticles and wirelessly networked with each other could help sniff the air for bombs and toxins on battlefields, experts tell UPI’s Nano World.

Call for papers: “e-Science 2006″

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

Authors are invited to submit papers with unpublished, original work of not more than 8 pages of double column text. Papers conforming to the above guidelines can be submitted through the e-Science 2006 paper submission system. It is expected that the proceedings will be published by the IEEE CS Press, USA and will be made available online through the IEEE Digital Library.

e-Science 2006 will also feature workshops, tutorials, exhibits, and an industrial track.

Among the topics concerning e-Science and Grid Computing are “Sensor Networks and e-Science”.

The complete call for papers is available here.
