Third International Summer School on Applications of WSN and Wireless Sensing in the Future Internet
EU FP7 projects SENSEI and PROSENSE invite you to the Third International Summer School on Applications of WSN and Wireless Sensing in the Future Internet, senzations’08. The school will take place at the International Postgraduate School at Jozef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana (Slovenia) from September 1-5, 2008.
Telematics, telemedicine, environmental monitoring, home automation and control, security and surveillance, industrial processes and agriculture are examples of potential applications of wireless sensor networks. Thanks to the broad range of possible applications and potential to change the way we interact with our environment, wireless sensor networks have gained a lot of attention in the research community and are becoming increasingly popular in the industry, too.
Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WS&AN) will also have a prominent place in the Future Internet.
Developing open (and business-driven) architecture; integration of heteregeneous WS&AN into a common framework of a global scale; making available WS&AN services and applications via universal service interfaces; and - in general - integration of the physical and the digital world in the Future Internet are some of the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners around the world.
The goal of this summer school is to:
- survey the most relevant research domains
- present various perspectives and underlying technologies
- identify the most important challenges and research themes, in particular in relation to the role of WS&AN in the Future Internet
- interact with distinguished scholars and establish contacts that may lead to research collaborations in the future
The intended audience consists of post-graduate students, PhD students, and young researchers from universities and industrial laboratories around the world. We expect about 40 participants.
Program
The summer school will last for 5 days and will feature a number of different activities:
Lectures: Each day will feature lectures and discussions around a research theme like programming of sensor networks, the Future Internet and WS&AN, integration of WSN with mobile networks, security in WSN, ZigBee vs. Bluetooth, remote health monitoring, etc.

Participants Workshop: All participants will have an opportunity to present their own work and involvement in the field.
Social activities: One afternoon is scheduled for an excursion, a dinner party will be organized as well as other social activities which should help to form a community among the young researchers

Venue
The summer school will take place at the Jozef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana (Slovenia).
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a beautiful and lively Central European city lying in a basin at the confluence of the Sava and Ljubljanica rivers, between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. River banks of the river Ljubljanica that divides the city centre below the castle hill are filled with good restaurants, and chic bars popular with visitors and locals alike. The town boats the most relaxing atmosphere of all European capitals and offers endless cultural events and excellent quality of life.
Both the residents of Ljubljana and numerous visitors say that Ljubljana is a city made to man’s measure. Classified as a medium-sized European city, it offers all the friendliness of a small town and at the same time everything that a capital should offer. Due to its geographical position, Ljubljana is an ideal departure point for discovering the many faces and beauties of Slovenia.
Ljubljana bears witness of all the five millenniums of its history. Apart from the remains of the Roman Emona, it boasts a Medieval castle and numerous old city centre Baroque buildings with uneven roofs and richly decorated façades and portals. The mosaic of Ljubljana is completed by picturesque bridges across the Ljubljanica river and the vast Tivoli park, which extends to the very city centre. The centre of Ljubljana owes its appearance partly to the masters of the Italian Baroque and partly to those of the Art Nouveau period, the latter being reflected in the style of many buildings built immediately after the earthquake of 1895. In the first half of the 20th century, it was the world famous Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik who stamped a strong personal mark on his birth place. The city’s appearance was later contributed to by his disciples and the “new wave” of distinguished young Slovenian architects.
Ljubljana is a city of culture, which, among other things, boasts one of the oldest philharmonic halls in the world. Every year it hosts more than 10,000 cultural events ranging from most prestigious concerts, theatre performances and fine art exhibitions, to avant-garde events and those pertaining to alternative culture. The events include as many as 14 international festivals.
Due to the international reputation of its university and institutes, Ljubljana gets visited by all kinds of scholars, due to its lively creative atmosphere by famous artists from across the world, due to the numerous business gatherings and fairs by vast numbers of businessmen, and due to the large number of congresses it hosts by various experts from all parts of the world.
Registration, cost and travelling
Participation is open to all qualified applicants, but the number of participants is limited to a maximum of 40. If we receive more applications, we will select participants based on their work area and background, geographic distribution, and date of registration. To indicate an interest to participate, please fill in the registration form that will be available soon on http://www.senzations.net.
The registration fee is 400EUR. The fee includes 6 days accommodation at the student hostel Celica or JSI appartments. Breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks, a gala dinner, and all study materials are included in the fee.
Participants are expected to arrive in the afternoon or evening of Sunday, August 31st. The school will start on Monday (01/09) morning and end on Friday (05/09) afternoon.

The summer school is jointly organized and supported by the SENSEI (www.sensei-project.eu) and PROSENSE projects.
SENSEI (Integrating the Physical with the Digital World of the Network of the Future) is an Integrated Project in the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme , in the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). The SENSEI project started on 1st January 2008, and is set out to run for three years. 19 partners from 11 European countries participate in the project.
PROSENSE (Promote, Mobilize, Reinforce and Integrate Wireless Sensor Networking Research and Researchers: Towards Pervasive Networking of WBC and the EU) is a Support Action project in in the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme. The PROSENSE project started on 1st March 2008 and is set out to run for two years. Eight partners from 8 European countries participate in the project.
