PermaSense

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

PermaSense observes physical parameters related to permafrost in steep high-alpine terrain over multiple years. Live sensor network data is transmitted from the Matterhorn, Switzerland field site at 3400 m.

Currently, they have 15 nodes sampling at 2 min intervals and relaying the data back home in real time. Estimated lifetime is 3 years with a little over 34 months to go! Check out the project website here. Presentation slides are here.

The IPSO Alliance

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

The idea of using the Internet Protocol (IP) for sensor networks has been brewing in the community for some time. Operating systems such as Contiki have supported it, the IETF 6lowpan group has standardized it, and startups such as Arch Rock have embraced it.  Today a number of major market players announced the IPSO Alliance – the Internet Protocol for Smart Objects Alliance – that promotes the use of the Internet Protocol for sensor networks. Founding company include Cisco, Sun, Ericsson, Atmel, Freescale, Arch Rock, and Dust Networks. Technical advisory board includes JP Vasseur, Adam Dunkels, and David Culler, amongst others. Read the press release, the white paper, and visit the web site.

RedSens: the Spanish WSN Consortium

Monday, September 15th, 2008

More than 20 members including universities, research centers and companies form RedSens, the Spanish consortium centered in the WSN research and market. The main purpose of the group is join efforts in order to set a common wireless communication platform to get all the sensor networks can interoperate to form heterogeneous infrastructures and to face up complex research projects promoting the synergies among all the members of the consortium. The group is coordinated by Libelium. The first meeting will be on 23th October in the Engineers University of Zaragoza (CPS).

Wireless sensors do Web-based monitoring

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Featuring a high-power IEEE 802.15.4-compliant transmitter operating at 2.4 GHz, the wiSeries provide Web-based monitoring and recording of temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. The sensors can transmit over 1,000 m, without obstructions, to a coordinator or controller directly connected to an Ethernet network or the Internet, charting data for display on active Web pages.

Designed for industrial or outdoor environments, the sensors are enclosed in a weatherproof, polycarbonate NEMA4/IP 65-rated housing. They can set alarms to be sent by e-mail, and run on batteries or ac power. (From $195 available now.)

Sharp preps Zigbee sensors

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Next year, Sharp intends to bring out sensors with integrated Zigbee functionality which will permit the establishment of Wireless Sensor Networks. “Zigbee-enabled sensors from Sharp are expected in the second half of 2009″, Uwe Hock, product marketing director for electronic components and LSI, told the Sharp Innovation Forum, in Seeon, near Munich, this week.

Sensors which Sharp is seeing as being suitable for having Zigbee functions added are: light control; motion detection; smoke detection; HVAC monitoring and control; window/door open/close; entertainment control; ambient light and RGB sensor; dust sensor; wide angle sensor; high operating temperature distance sensor; high accuracy distance measuring sensor; multi-purpose distance measuring sensor; battery operation distance measuring sensor; long distance measuring sensor.

CFP EWSN2009

Monday, September 8th, 2008

EWSN 2009, the European Conference on Wireless Sensor Networks, is the sixth of a series of annual meetings focusing on the latest research in the area of wireless sensor networks. EWSN 2009 will be held at University College Cork, Cork, Ireland, on February 11th-13th, 2009.

EWSN is acknowledged as one of the most competitive and well-established international conferences in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It attracts papers of the highest quality from researchers around the globe, emphasising work that involves inter-disciplinary collaboration. EWSN is consistently well-attended, with delegates that reflect a healthy mix of university academics and industry representatives, that are drawn from all the major centres of WSN research activity and that span all the main continents. The goal of this conference is to create a forum where researchers with different experiences and backgrounds, from hardware to applications, can discuss cross-layer integration, novel solutions for specific problems and envisage the future development of WSN functionalities.

Survey to identify trends in sensors and their configurations for the next 5 years.

Friday, September 5th, 2008

The IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) is preparing this survey to identify trends in sensors and their configurations for the next 5 years.

Both Sensorsmag.com and Sensors and Transducers Journal are supporting us in broadcasting and publishing results from this survey.

The survey is here.

Your input is very important to us for accurate and useful results. Your contribution to the survey is anonymous to protect your privacy and confidentiality. Please complete this survey by September 30, 2008.

They will publish the results in the open literature. Each day they will update the summary results from the survey. The results will be at http://imm.ieee-ims.org/.

Thank you for contributing!
