PhD Research Project: Autonomous, sustainable and reliable wireless sensor networks for buildings http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/09/14/phd-research-project-autonomous-sustainable-and-reliable-wireless-sensor-networks-for-buildings/ http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/09/14/phd-research-project-autonomous-sustainable-and-reliable-wireless-sensor-networks-for-buildings/#comments Wed, 14 Sep 2011 07:41:06 +0000 Marco Zennaro http://www.wsnblog.com/?p=3726 Behavioural monitoring, itemised billing, carbon trading, smart grid, building information management and retrofit are all key agendas at present yet all of these have at their core a need for the ability to monitor a building and in some cases, the occupants within it. Therefore a starting point with all of these is an in-building network that can provide sensing and control functions.

However, building such a network brings new research challenges:
There is clear evidence that battery powered sensors soon become ineffective when people lose the motivation to replace batteries. Therefore any in-building network must not be reliant on batteries. This brings into play energy scavenging/harvesting techniques which allow sensors to be completely autonomous.

The intention is that the Salford Energy House will provide and environment in which to carry out technical trials and to evaluate the performance and sustainability of the sensing system. Our industrial partner is Salford Electronics who have been working with the University on an EU project (Dehems) to develop a range of sensors to monitor gas consumption within houses. This experience plus their general expertise in electronics design, and specifically wireless based monitoring systems will be invaluable to the research and provide a route to impact after the work is completed.

The closing date for applications is 23rd September 2011.

Post-doctoral Researcher Position in WSN at University of Trento, Italy http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/07/11/post-doctoral-researcher-position-in-wsn-at-university-of-trento-italy/ http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/07/11/post-doctoral-researcher-position-in-wsn-at-university-of-trento-italy/#comments Mon, 11 Jul 2011 16:17:53 +0000 Claro Noda http://www.wsnblog.com/?p=3599 The D3S group at the University of Trento, Italy, invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). D3S is a cross-institution research group focusing on dynamic, decentralised, distributed systems. In the context of WSNs, the D3S group has been successful in bringing research results into real-world, long-term, operational deployments. Examples are the structural health monitoring of a medieval tower, and the closed-loop control of lighting in a road tunnel, which both received a Best Paper Award at IPSN (2009 and 2011).

We are seeking a candidate to conduct research on novel directions for WSNs, geared towards simplifying their development and maximising their adoption in real-world contexts. The issues involved go all across the board including programming platforms, communication protocols, and tools supporting in-field deployment. The candidate will have the opportunity to work on curiosity-driven and application-driven projects, as well as initiate new ones.

The position is partially tied to the makeSense EU project, whose goal is to simplify the programming of WSNs, and increase their impact through integration with business processes. The candidate is expected to contribute to the design and implementation of programming abstractions and the protocols supporting their efficient distributed execution in the WSN.

The Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science is a leading and fast-growing research institution, characterised by a young and international faculty and by a large, international student population. Indicators for scientific production place the department among the top in Europe. Trento is a vibrant city with a beautifully preserved historic center, consistently ranked at the top for quality of life in Italy. It offers a variety of cultural and sports opportunities all year around, as well as excellent food and wine.

The deadline for applications is August 31, 2011. Applications should be sent via e-mail (subject: “D3S postdoc application”) to gianpietro.picco[AT_sign]unitn.it.
