PhD Studentships in Sensor Networks for Surveillance and Monitoring Applications, UK

Friday, March 13th, 2009

As part of a collaborative research work with SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems Limited, we wish to recruit a research student for aPhD study on sensor networks for surveillance and monitoringapplications. The main objective of the proposed research project is to explore the usage of sensor networks in improving monitoring and surveillance performances, with an emphasis on the provision of actionable user information (e.g. decision support etc.) gathered from
integrated multi-modal systems. This requires, first, improving deployment strategies and associated supporting tools for the deployment of static sensor nodes in order to provide optimal coverage/context awareness from the deployed system within the monitored area.

Entry Requirements: For this research studentship, we are seeking a talented graduate, having (or be expected to obtain) at least an upper second class honours degree (first class honours preferred), MSc orequivalent in electrical engineering or computer science. Good mathematical background and experience of sensor signal processing, distributed/networked systems, Bayesian based inference techniques, data/information fusion and real time systems would be most desirable.

SFI Starting Investigator Research Grant (SIRG) in Ireland

Friday, October 31st, 2008

The CLARITY centre for sensor Web technology In Ireland is selecting high-profile early-career-stage investigators that want to apply for a SIRG in the area of sensor networking. Applicants must have at least 3 years post-PhD experience and not more than eight years beyond their PhD. Grant holders will be based at UCD in Dublin.

The SFI (Science Foundation Research Grant )Starting Investigator Research Grant (SIRG) Programme provides an opportunity for excellent early-career-stage investigators to carry out independent research in the fields of science and engineering that underpin biotechnology, information and communications technology, and sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies. The award also provides funding for a postgraduate student, who will be primarily supervised by the Starting Investigator (SI). The SI will work with an associated mentor, who will provide the necessary support and infrastructure for the project to take place. SIRG awards are up to €500,000 direct costs for a period of four years; up to 20 awards are expected to be funded through this Call.

For more information about the SIRG Eligibility criteria of the Applicant, please follow the link. Potential applicants should send their CV and a 1-page lobbying document about the research that they are willing to undertake to ruzzelli@ucd.ie with a subject “SIRG applicant” .

The UCD internal closing date for the call is 13:00 Friday 21st of November.

PhD studentship: Quantitative exploitation of distributed environmental measurements in high-mountain areas

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Surface processes in cold mountains are laterally highly variable and often investigated using spatially-distributed measurements and models. However, the full exploitation of distributed environmental measurements and models is often hindered by imperfect data (measurement errors, gaps, changing protocols, spatial autocorrelation effects) and a lack of methods and tools.

Within the NCCR-MICS (www.mics.org) project PermaSense, this PhD candidate will also be responsible for the conceptual design of the data management backend (based on existing SwissExperiment infrastructure) and interface with project partners at the ETH Zurich, the EPF Lausanne and the University of Basel.
