Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Network (co-located with CPSWEEK 2012) – will host a Ph.D. Forum on sensor network Research. The Forum will provide an opportunity for Ph.D. students to present their dissertation research, including work in progress, to the sensor network community and obtain individual feedback from leading researchers in the field. The Forum will be structured as a series of short presentations by the students, followed by individual discussions, feedback, and advise. The student presentations will be interleaved with speeches by leading researchers, who will provide their own perspectives on current and future sensor network research, as well as on how to best purse a Ph.D. in this field. Participating students will also have the opportunity to present a poster during the main conference to leverage further interaction with CPSWEEK attendees.

Current Ph.D. students in the early stages of their career are encouraged to submit a 2-page extended abstract about their dissertation research in sensor networking to be considered for the Ph.D. Forum. The abstract shall also include a one-paragraph bio of the student, along with information on how long he/she has been in Ph.D. school and the expected time until graduation. The student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and
others should be acknowledged. Submissions will be reviewed by the Ph.D. Forum committee to ensure quality, relevance, and potential benefit from attendance to the Forum. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to participate in person to the Forum – to be held on April 15th, 2012 – and to present a poster both at the Forum and at the main conference.

Submissions must be received no later than February 20th, 2012 via e-mail to luca@sics.se, with subject “IPSN12 PhD Forum Submission”. Submissions must be in PDF format, be written in English, of no more than two pages in length (all inclusive), and adhere to the IPSN formatting guidelines
(http://ipsn.acm.org/2012/submission.html). The abstract should include the author’s name, affiliation, and email address. Submissions will be explicitly acknowledged.

CONET 2012 http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/12/05/conet-2012/ http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/12/05/conet-2012/#comments Mon, 05 Dec 2011 14:26:13 +0000 Claro Noda http://www.wsnblog.com/?p=3976 The Third International Workshop on Networks of Cooperating Objects (CONET 2012) April 16th, 2012 – Beijing, China, will be co-located with the CPS Week 2012

During the last decade, the continuous improvement and miniaturization of integrated circuits has led to new types of computing systems. An emerging trend is the collaboration of miniature devices to achieve a common goal. Representative examples include wireless sensor networks, pervasive computing and embedded systems. Along with this trend, the notion of Cooperating Objects (COs) collectively refers to embedded computing devices equipped with communication as well as sensing or actuation capabilities, able to cooperate and organize themselves autonomously into networks to achieve a common task. As such, COs envision a single, coherent system formed by a wide range of devices. The complexity germane to the interaction inside and across networks of COs presents a rich set of research questions, and entails a wide range of scientific disciplines, such as networking, software engineering, and control theory.

CONET 2012 will provide a discussion forum for researchers, aimed at fostering synergy and convergence of complementary areas towards the vision of networks of COs. Work-in-progress systems, provocative ideas, and position papers paving the road towards such synergy and convergence are particularly welcome.

For more info, including topics of interest, see the workshop website.

UNconference and Demo Competition at EMBC http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/07/30/unconference-and-demo-competition-at-embc/ http://www.wsnblog.com/2011/07/30/unconference-and-demo-competition-at-embc/#comments Sat, 30 Jul 2011 13:29:33 +0000 Claro Noda http://www.wsnblog.com/?p=3634 The First EEE EMBS Unconference on Wearable & Ubiquitous Technology for Health & Wellness will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, collocated with 33rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC ’11). The purpose of the day is to bring together all those who care about addressing key challenges in the translation of technology from the lab to the field around wearable and ubiquitous technology for health and wellness.

The UNconference means that the agenda/schedule for the day will be created live the day of the event. The real time nature means that emerging developments can be discussed and new ideas and unfolding research can be explored.

The unconference will also host a Wearable Technology Demo Competition. This session will be organized using the speed geeking format. Attendees will be divided in groups. Each group will have about 5 minutes to examine each demonstration and discuss with the authors. Your presentation should first highlight (similar to an elevator pitch) the need and impact of your technology (~2min), followed by a demonstration (~3min).

This is an intense presentation format. There are 10-15 demo’s happening at once all around the edge of the room. Each is being watched by a small group for 5 min. Then they move to the next project. Each demonstrator of a project presents 10 times in a row each time to a different small group. This format has a few advantages both for the viewers and presenters. Viewers get a more intimate demo, seeing the application or device up close instead of just up on a large screen and ask questions of the presenters during or at the conclusion of their demo. Presenters get to practice and improve their pitch over the hour of speed geeking.

Important Dates

Demo abstracts due: August 5th 2011
Acceptance notification: August 12th 2011
